Senior Quality Engineer

Elsevier

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The truth about scientific discovery is that it’s often incremental. Breakthrough thinking happens because scientists test each other’s hypotheses and build on each other’s ideas. So imagine how powerful data-sharing could be in advancing knowledge. Imagine a shareable data repository for the world’s scientists, where pioneering thinking becomes accessible and current innovation becomes searchable, identifiable and actionable. That’s what you’ll help build at our emerging tech hub in Amsterdam: an intelligent data repository, consisting of a RESTful API incorporating a wide range of technologies – from HTML to CSS to Cucumber – all powering a user-centered website.

Or, as we like to call it, ‘Github for Scientists’.

Stack Overview

You’ll find no shortage of the world’s most advanced technologies in this role. You’ll get the opportunity to use:

  • Web development techs, i.e. HTML, CSS and JavaScript, including Node.js
  • Testing software: Cucumber, Selenium
  • Appium automation tool
  • An Agile Scrum environment
  • RESTful APIs

More about the role

It might go without saying, but having a deep knowledge of Quality Engineering is a must. You should also be familiar with creating really high-quality user-centered products. This role is part of Mendeley Data, a mixed-discipline Scrum team centered around a common goal: to make sharing versioned research data easy, enjoyable and empowering. You’ll own the quality of a user-centered, progressively enhanced website. You’ll test RESTful APIs, define and monitor technical and business functional metrics in production and staging, and grow the automation suite around user-exposed functionality.

A crucial skill for this role is the ability to spot performance or quality issues before they occur, and to correct them proactively. You’ll also be collaborating regularly with a product manager, a business analyst and a UI designer, and working in 2 week sprints with daily standups, grooming, planning and retros. As such, the ability to work with, support and inspire others is vital to this role as well.

More about you

As the perfect candidate, the most important qualification you’ll need is demonstrable working experience as a Quality Test Engineer. Ideally this will include experience of: defining test cases to prove that a user story works; testing web frontend code written in HTML 5, CSS, Javascript and Node; and testing both web and desktop sites, with tools like Cucumber, Selenium, and Appium. We would love for you to have experience of a Continuous Integration environment, and to have a strong understanding of QE methodologies, process improvement, and Scrum Agile software. Last, but certainly not least, is that strong written and verbal communion skills are a must.

Oh, and you’ve got a positive, constructive approach with an emphasis on collaboration and flexibility, right? We need someone with confidence, but who can admit when someone else has a better idea too.
